Mayor Awa asked whether Tower Arctic Ltd. had the expertise to construct the Apex Bridge replacement.

- Ms. Adeleke advised that Dillon Consulting Limited designed the bridge and their contract expired in 2022 and was not extended as the project was not approved for the 2023 Capital Spending Plan. Ms. Adeleke explained that in order to provide support during the tendering process, Dillon Consulting Limited had a contract for engineering support to enable them to review bids and provide input during the tendering process.

- Councillor Stevenson expressed concern regarding the declaration of another civic holiday that was close to the civic holiday in April. He also commented that if another civic holiday was declared, it was very short notice for employers to adhere to. Councillor Stevenson asked if the Government of Nunavut was consulted, as they are the largest employer in Iqaluit.

Councillor Sheppard acknowledged the work being carried out by the RCMP over the past few weeks in relation to public drinking. He noted that there had been a significant increase in patrols, which has been noticed by both residents and business owners.

Mayor Awa indicated that he recently attended the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference and Trade Show from June 6 to 9, 2024 in Calgary. During the conference, Mayor Awa explained that the communities in Nunavut rely on sealifts for goods and requested that funding requests to help with the costs be considered in a timelier fashion.

Alternate Deputy Mayor Flaherty advised that he was unable to attend the May 28, 2024 Council meeting and indicated that he supported Councillor Sheppard’s concerns regarding open alcohol consumption and requesting the Government of Nunavut to contribute to a solution to improve community safety.
